Smoothies Part III: Easy Smoothie Recipes to Get You Started

Below are a few super-easy smoothie recipes to get you started:

Good Old Fashioned Banana Smoothie

- 1 banana, peeled

- 1 1/2 cups skim milk

- 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt

- 1 tsp vanilla extract

Blend until smooth and enjoy.

Berry Yum Smoothie

- 1 cup raspberries

- 1 cup strawberries

- 1 cup sparkling water or seltzer

- 1 cup apple juice or orange juice

- 1 tsp lemon juice

Blend until smooth and enjoy.

Banana Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

- 1 banana, peeled

- 2 cups skim milk

- 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder

- 2 tbsp creamy peanut butter

- 1 tbsp agave nectar or other sweetener

Blend until smooth and REALLY enjoy!

Most of these ingredients can easily be substituted with others. For example, if you don’t like raspberries, try blueberries. If you hate chocolate, leave it out or add something else in its place.

All of these smoothies can be made with fresh or frozen fruit, depending on what’s available and your own preferences. You can make them more creamy or less creamy by adding or removing dairy products like milk and yogurt.

Combine these basic recipes with some of the ideas we shared in previous articles, like adding tofu, beans, nuts, or extra fiber in the form of ground flax seeds or wheat germ. It’s your smoothie – add, remove or replace any of the ingredients according to your taste. You can even create your own special smoothies from scratch!

Extra Yummy Tips:

- Add a few ice cubes to make your smoothie frosty.

- Add less liquid to make a thick fruity dessert you can eat with a spoon.

- Warm this thick mixture and pour it over light vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt.

- Create an all-vegetable smoothie, heat and eat like soup. :-)
